If you are trying to make money online with your own website, one of the smartest things you can do is to build a list. This involves using an autoresponder to capture your visitor’s name and email address (with their permission of course!)

If you look to the right hand side of this page you will see an example of an optin box, offering an EBook in exhange for the visitors name and email address.

Building your list is something that will become easier as you increase the traffic to your website, but how do you actually go about making money from that email opt-in list?

Here are 7 tips based on my experience of marketing online since 2004.

1) Provide useful and interesting content to your susbcribers- whether you are sending broadcasts to your subscribers or using a sequence of follow up messages, ask yourself, would you find this information useful? If you are sending dull, dry information to your subscribers they may end up deleting your messages, or even worse, clicking the unsubscribe link.

2) Don’t email your subscribers too much – I don’t know about you, but if I subscribe to someone’s list and they start emailing me every day, I start becoming immune to their messages.  I’m most likely to hit the delete button without reading the message when this happens (and believe me, it happens a lot!). It is up to you to decide how much is too much, but my personal preference is no more than 3 times per week.

3) Follow up with your subscribers regularly – although you don’t want to be emailing people too much, you also need to find the right balance and ensure that you email your optin list on a regular basis. If they forget who you are, the chances are they will think your message is spam or hit that unsubscribe link.

4) Don’t just Promote - if every message you send reads like an advert your subscribers will figure that you are simply trying to sell to them. You need to ensure that a good proportion of your messages are non promotional. This allows you to build trust with your subscribers so that when you do advertise something they are more likely to buy from you.

5) Don’t forget to Promote – again it’s about balance. Although you don’t want to be promoting all the time, remember that you are building this list to make money, so you do need to send some promotional messages. From my experience these work better if you recommend something that you have personally used (or at the least, thoroughly researched) yourself. Write the letter like you are recommending something to a friend rather than trying to sell something to someone you don’t know.

6) Build a relationship with your subscribers - as well as proving your subscribers with content you should also interact with them and try to build a relationship. Let them know the occassional personal detail about your life or ask them questions. My own follow up series has a question in the very first letter and I’ve found that around 10% of the people who sign up will reply. This allows me to have a 1-1 email conversation with people, which often results in a sale.

7) Keep  adding Fresh Subscribers – finally, it is natural that people will leave your list over time or become less interested in what you have to say (perhaps because they are no longer as interested as they were when they signed up initially).  For this reason you should continually work on adding more subscribers to your list.

Hopefully you’ll get a few ideas on how to make more money from your email opt-in list. If you have any more ideas feel free to make a comment below.
