#1 – You have the Potential for Higher Profits – instead of getting a commission for every sale you make, you can keep all of the money for yourself (minus any payment processing fees and overheads of course).

#2 – You can Build a List of Buyers – building a big list is one of the most important things you can do as an internet marketer. A list of buyers is a lot more valuable than a list of freebie seekers. If you have your own product you can add buyers to your list and make further profits down the line.

#3 – It is Easier to do Joint Ventures – if you have your own product you can approach other product owners and set up a joint venture agreement. This could involve a mailing to your list where you each promote each other’s products. Or it could include offering each other’s products on a thank you page.

#4 – You Can Utilize the Power of Affiliates – if you have your own product you can allow affiliates to promote your product for you and pay them a commission per sale. You may not like this, but it is one of the best ways to increase your profits in internet marketing. Once you have one product you should aim to create another related product so that it can be used as an upsell. If you don’t do this you will be leaving money on the table.

#6 – Your Reputation will Improve – as a product creator you’ll have more respect from fellow marketers and customers alike.

#7 – You are in Full Control – affiliate programs can shut down, change their commission levels or do pretty much anything you like. If you have your own product you are completely in control and do not have to depend on a 3rd party to send your payments. You can also set the price that you want to, experiment with the sales copy and make any changes that you want to.

#8 – You have bonus material – if you are promoting affiliate products it often helps to provide a bonus for anyone who decides to purchase the affiliate product through your link. As a product owner, you have an advantage here as you can offer something that you normally sell and this will usually have a higher perceived value than an MRR or PLR product offered as a bonus.

So hopefully this gives you a few ideas of the advantages of creating your own product. Creating a product can be hard work and also pretty daunting if you are doing it for the first time, but the sense of achievements and the benefits of doing this outweight the time and effort.

The more popular your website is, the more likely people are to copy it.

Sometimes it is completely innocent and is just a newbie who is trying to be successful and doesn’t realise that it is wrong. At other times it can be done by someone who should really know better. This post is part rant, but hopefully will be helpful too, as I’ve also listed some information about how to deal with this problem if it happens to you.

Here is why you should never copy any part of someone’s website without their permission:

a) It is stealing!

b) If you want to be successful you need to create your own unique content. A lot of duplicate content is filtered by the search engines so you will probably find that you won’t rank for any keywords in the search engines if you just copy content from elsewhere.

If you can’t or don’t have time to create your own content, then hire a ghostwriter to do it for you.

Here is a little guide on what to do if someone copies your website. This year so far I’ve managed to get 4 peoples’ websites shut down as a result of plagarism. One person had actually copied my entire site and replaced all my product and affiliate links with his own links.

Step 1 – Contact the Website Owner – The first thing you need to do is contact the owner of the website. Most websites should have a contact page with an email address or a form on it, but if they don’t you can go to Whois.sc and enter the domain name. This will tell you the contact email address along with other useful information such as where the site is hosted (which you may well need if the person doesn’t respond to you).

Send them a polite email informing them that they are infringing your content and ask them to remove the infringing content from their website. Ask them to remove it as soon as possible and reply back when they have done this. You may then want to wait a week and send a second email if you don’t hear back from them. Sometimes people will remove the content and get back to you, but most often they will ignore you and either remove the content or keep it there. If this happens you need to proceed to step 2 below.

Step 2 -  Contact the Website Host – if the website in question does not remove the plagiarised content, the next step is to contact their host. You can easily find their host by checking the Whois site mentioned above. Most website hosts have a ticket system and you can use this to submit a ticket to let them know that someone using their hosting service is infringing copyright. Let them know your contact information, the name of your site, the name of the infringing site and tell them that you have made efforts to contact the website owner.

I have found that most website hosts that I have contacted for this reason have been very responsive. A good hosting company does not want to risk legal action being taken as a result of copyright infringement. In some cases you will have to submit something called a DMCA notice, which stands for Digital Millenium Copyright Act notice. If you need help generating one of these there is a handy DMCA notice generator here. In many cases a hosting company will accept a digital signature (i.e. you typing your name as a signature to the form and emailing it to them), but in other cases you may need to fax the notice with a real signature or send it via postal mail.

Hopefully you will have success with either step 1 or step 2 above and the content will be removed quite quickly. If this doesn’t happen the only other choices you have are to take legal action, or to modify some of your own content so that it is different from the infringing website’s content. Sadly, sometimes the latter is the best option because legal action is both expensive and time consuming.

If you want to check whether or not your website has been copied, the easiest way to do this is to go to Copyscape and enter the URL of your site. You can do this check once a month or so to keep on top of people who are trying to copy your site.

Run a background check on suppliers

If you are like most online retailers, when you decide on a product you want to sell, you will start Googling your way to finding the right supplier who stocks the product and can sell it to you at the right price.

While Google searches can be a fantastic way to find suppliers, it can also expose you to a lot of crooks who are posing as suppliers, but who are actually scammers ready to take your money and run. Here’s what you need to do to avoid this:

Review the supplier’s contact information

Generally, the more contact information they give and the more options for contact they provide you (phone, email, physical address), the more you can trust them. If they only list an email address, consider it a sign that the supplier may not be trustworthy. If the email address is a Hotmail or Gmail address, this is another sign that the supplier is not the real deal.

Before you place an order, call, or at least email, the supplier to introduce yourself. While it’s a nice touch to speak with your supplier before you do business with them, it will also give you an opportunity to see how long they take to reply to emails and/or how courteous they are on the phone.

HOT TIP! If the supplier does list a physical address, copy and paste the address into Google Maps and check that the address actually exists. Take a look at the Street View and see if the area is a commercial one. If you see a residential home, it might be another sign that they supplier is not legitimate. I will add a caution here that many legitimate wholesalers do operate out of their home garages, so don’t write off a supplier completely if you don’t see a large warehouse!

Know when a deal is too good to be true

A common wholesale scam occurs when so-called “wholesale suppliers” advertise hot selling items like iPads, mobile phones and laptops at extremely low prices that are, quite literally, too good to be true.

While it is a nice thought you can purchase wholesale Mac laptops for $147 and resell them for $900, this simply isn’t the case. When start to learn the basics about wholesale buying, you will find that most wholesale items sell for around 5-30% less than the retail price, depending on how much you purchase.

In short, if a deal seems too good to be true, it most likely is.

Avoid fakes, replicas or counterfeits

Replicas of designer or branded items are illegal to produce and sell. Try selling these on eBay and your account will get closed down pretty fast. Try importing them in from China, where the majority are produced, and you might get a call from the local customs authority.

While it can be tempting to go down the route of selling replica items which can sell like hotcakes at good prices, doing so is dangerous and can present consequences ranging from the aforementioned eBay account closure, to fines from customs, to prosecution by the brand owner.

Forecast your potential profits before you buy

An essential part of market research is determining how much profit you will potentially make on each sale.  In order to determine whether a product is viable or not, you must calculate the cost of the individual item, the cost of shipping the items to your home or warehouse and the cost of selling the item (web hosting fees, marketplace fees, PayPal fees, etc.).

Too many retailers simply make a decision on a product based on a wholesaler’s price per unit and do not calculate to associated costs of selling an item. In doing so, you can easily miscalculate your margins and wind up losing money on each sale you make.

While there is a lot to keep in mind when you are buying wholesale items, the benefits for your business are plentiful. Just make sure you keep this quick-guide handy for next time you go looking for a supplier!

I’ve been doing internet marketing since 2004 and I’ve found that time and time again I’ve felt glad that I have more than one stream of online income.

By a different stream of income I am talking about different websites, different products, different sources of traffic and more. In the online business world nothing is ever guaranteed so you need to make sure that you have a backup plan just in case.

Here are a few examples of things that can go wrong. I’ve experienced some of these things myself or seen other people experience some of these things.

• The affiliate program or business opportunity that you have been promoting closes down
• Your website’s position in Google drops and you start to receive less and less traffic
• The hot niche that you were earning lots of money in suddenly becomes not so hot
• Your product becomes out of date and is no longer in demand
• Some amazing marketing techniques that you were using stop working

It all sounds a bit depressing, but it is a reality that things are always changing in internet marketing and you need to anticipate this by ensuring that you create multiple streams of income. Don’t ever rely on one website, or one affiliate program or one source of traffic for your income. If you have one amazing website that gets 90% of its traffic from Google, what happens if one day you stop getting that traffic?

I currently have around twently websites in at least 10 different niches so I feel happy knowing that I am not relying on one single niche for my income. I also have a few of my own products and promote more than 40 different affiliate products over my websites, so I don’t feel worried that my income is coming from one place. What you need to ask yourself, is “would I survive without this particular website” or “would I survive if the income for this product went away?” If the answer to either of these questions is no, you may want to consider creating an additional income stream or two.

The one exception to this rule is if you are a newbie to internet marketing. If you have never made a dime online before there is no point in duplicating something that you have not yet been successful with. For example if you have built a website it is better to focus on that site and get it into profit first before you start building another. When you start out it is common to make mistakes and learn from them over time and it is better to focus on the one thing during that period of time. Once you’ve made a success of it, you can then go on to start your second project and repeat this. Here are a few ideas of different ways to make money.

Best Business Ideas 2012

#1 – Niche Affiliate Marketing
Niche affiliate marketing is how I made most of my income in 2011 and it involves finding a good profitable niche that you are interested in, some high quality products that pay high commissions and building a website related to your niche. Once you have set up a website, most of the work involved here is in getting traffic to your site. If you put the work in upfront, this type of business can provide you with a lot of income for very little work. For example, one of my niche websites makes over $2000 per month in commissions and I put in around 1-2 hours of work per week on that site. I had to work very hard on that site for the first 6 months, but now the site is very close to being a passive income stream. #2 – Your Own Information Product
This is slighly more advanced than affiliate marketing as you have to be able to create a product and setup an online selling system, however, you may be surprised to learn that it is not as difficult as you might think. Again, there is a good amount of work up front to get this going, but once you have done this the amount of effort you need to put in will reduce significantly. The costs are also very low as you are creating a digital downloadable product such as an EBook so there are no manufacturing costs involved. If you want to learn how to do this, I highly recommend taking a look at Lee McIntyre’s Instant Internet Lifestyle training course. This is a seminar that originally cost people almost $1000 to attend, but he provides the videos for this full seminar for less than $20.

#3 – Freelancing
It can take a few months to get a website into a state where it is getting regular visitors and making sales. If you need money NOW, then freelancing is a great way to go. With freelancing you can start earning money from home within a few days or weeks. Types of jobs that you can do include writing articles, proof reading, translation, graphic design, virtual assistance, backlink building and more. There are lots of freelancing websites that you can join for free and start browsing jobs.

#4 – Multi Level Marketing
MLM isn’t for everyone, and is often given a bad name as there are a lot of poor MLM programs on the internet that charge high fees and don’t deliver much in the way of a product. However, on the plus side there are a lot of quality MLM programs and if you like working in a team rather than alone it can be a great way to earn money, while getting help and support from your upline. If you want to try this for free SFI is a good one and this is how I started my online business back in 2004. If you prefer a higher paying company, then MyWorldPlus is a great choice. #5 – Google Adsense Websites
This is very similar to niche affiliate marketing, but instead of advertising products on your website, you put Google Adsense on your site instead. The ads displayed on your site will automatically be related to the topic of your site and you’ll earn money every time a visitor clicks on one of your ads. The great thing about this is that you get paid without making sales. Google Adsense is free to join, but you will need your own website before you apply. 1) What Does the Theme Look Like? This a very obvious question, but probably one of the most important for you when deciding how to choose a WordPress theme. The majority of people want their website to be professional looking and attractive, so this has to be one of the main considerations when you choose a theme. Have a think about the impression that you want your site to portray to others. Should it look business like and professional? Or informal and fun? Or perhaps sleek and flashy? The answer to this is going to be dependent on the type of people that you are trying to attract.

2) Is the Theme Compatible with all Browsers? Not everyone uses the same browser as you, so it is important to consider what the theme looks like in other browsers. At a minimum consider looking at a demo of your potential theme choices in Firefox, Internet Explorer and Chrome. You may find that it looks different in one of these browsers.

3) Is the Theme Widget Ready? The majority of website owners like to add things to the side bar of their website. For example an opt-in box, some banners, a list of recent posts or some links. Before you decide on a theme make sure that it supports widgets and find out where the widgets can be added.

4)  Does the Theme Support adding Banner Ads or Google Adsense? Do you intend to add banners or Google Adsense to your site? If so, consider where on the site you would like these positioned. Does the theme support the addition of a banner or an ad in the sidebar? Footer? Header area?

5) Is the Theme Search Engine Friendly? Clean code and fast loading graphics are just some of the things that you may want to consider. Some themes also have built in SEO features, but if not there are excellent SEO plugins available such as the Platinum SEO plugin.

6) Has the Theme been overused? If a theme is very popular, particularly in the market that you are in, it could look a little bit tired. In this case you may either want to consider a newer, fresher theme, or customize the theme with a new header and layout to make it look more unique.

7) Is the theme Easy to Customize? Most people want to modify their theme to make it their own. For example you may want to add a custom header, change the font size and colors, move the sidebars or create menus. Does the theme make it easy for you to do this, or will you have to go digging into the theme’s PHP code?

8 ) Do the theme owners provide support? Most professional theme owners will provide some sort of support, either included with the purchase or as an add on option. For free themes you may be able to get some support, or you may find that you are on your own. If you think you will need some help customizing your theme or troubleshooting problems when they crop up you may want to consider choosing a theme that provides support.

9) Are there any Reviews? Before you decide on a specific WordPress theme it is worth searching for some reviews on that theme first. You should be able to find some reviews on Google to help you understand the pros and cons of a particular theme before making that all important decision.

10) Should you use a Professional or Free Theme? The answer to this question is going to depend largely on your budget, but if you are serious about building your business you may want to consider investing in a professional theme. A professional theme is more likely to be kept up to date and you are more likely to get support.
