The Quest for a Better Search Engine Rank

When I first started my web site promotion activities in the middle of last year I didn't have the faintest clue about how search engines work. As many of us do, I thought that I could just submit my site to a few search engines every so often then just sit back and wait.

Of course, that didn't do me any good! I soon learned that it took a lot of hard work to get a better search engine rank. The first think I learned about was linking. The more links you have pointing to your site, the more chance you have of achieving a better search engine rank. This makes sense, as it's a bit like voting. The more websites you have "voting" for your site, the better your site must be. But not all votes are created equal.. votes from more "important" sites sites have a much higher weighting.

I started off my linking campaign shortly after this discovery, trying to get as many links from quality websites as possible. This can be a pretty depressing task, especially when you have a new website with a Google Page rank of zero and nobody wants to link to you. However, I persevered and was rewarded a few months later with a Page rank of 4. Woo hoo!

If you have no idea what I'm on about I've written a Beginner's Guide to Exchanging Links to help explain the basics and I've also compiled a useful list of linking resources and directories to help speed up the process.

Shortly after I'd finished my linking frenzy I discovered an even better way to increase my backlinks. Writing articles. By writing a short article and submitting it to article directories with a resource box containing a link to my site, I easily acquired 100 or so more backlinks to my site. If only I'd started off this way, I wouldn't have had so many link request rejection messages. I'd really recommend this for everyone who is promoting a new website. Have a look at my article resources page for some ideas on what to do if you just can't face writing.

A couple of months ago I realised that although I now had hundreds of links pointing to my site, along with a page rank of 4, I was getting almost no visitors coming from search engines (apart from the odd 10 or 20 people searching for "Homebiz"). It was at this point I learned more about keywords and the amazing tool called Wordtracker.

Instead of trying to get on the first page of the search results for highly competitive terms such as "Home Business" or "Work from Home" I started using Wordtracker to find less popular (but still frequently searched on) keywords. By using the brainstorming tool and searching for sites with a high "KEI" (keyword effectiveness index), I found a set of keywords that were less competitive, and optimized my site for these words. Hooray - I'm finally on the first page of Google for a handful of keywords! To see how I did this, have a look at my article on How to improve your Search Enging Ranking.

So, my quest for a better search engine rank continues... I started another linking frenzy last week, I'm continuing my research in Wordtracker and I'm submitting my articles to all the directories that I forgot about the last time. Hopefully I'll be on my way to a PR5 soon, but unfortunately it's many times harder to get from a PR4 to a PR5 than it is from a PR0 to a PR4!

I'm going to sign off now, as I've rambled on for long enough, it's after 1.30am and I've got to get up for work tomorrow in less than 6 hours :-(

Goodnight!

Simple System for making money

This is just a quick post to talk about this new Simple System for Making Money. I just set this up today after a recommendation from my sponsor, Mal Keenan of the Home Business Tips Newsletter. I won't say much about it just now, as I only set this up a few hours ago, but I will post my progress with this in a few weeks time. In the mean time, why don't you sign up for the Free Special Report and decide for yourself?

I also just upgraded to a PRO account at Traffic Swarm (did I mention it was payday today?). I've actually had an account with Traffic Swarm since May last year, but in the last few weeks I've been getting quite a few of my downline upgrading to PRO. Since I wasn't a PRO member myself I was actually missing out on commisions of $5 per month for my first level downline members that upgraded as well as $4, $3, $2 and $1 commisions per month for my 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th levels. So, now that I have finally upgraded, hopefully I'll start to see some money coming in from Traffic Swarm too! I'm also get a number of extra benefits for upgrading too:
  • 200 credits for each new signup (instead of 100)
  • 2500 credits added to my account each month
  • 1 bonus credit per page that I view
  • 1 bonus credit per page that my downline views
  • Unlimited links
  • Priority support

So, I'll see how this goes for a few months. If I make a little money and see some extra results then it will be worth it.

Well, that's all for just now. I'm actually writing this in my lunch hour at work. Unfortunately I now have to stop doing this and start reviewing design documents instead :-(

Happy Easter!!

The Story so far

At the beginning of last year (2004) I started searching on the internet for ways to make money online. It wasn't that I was particularly skint or anything like that - just that I wasn't feeling very fulfilled with my day job. Software engineering doesn't really float my boat, shall we say.

I ended up joining SFI, otherwise known as Strong Future International. If you've not heard of them before, this is a free to join affiliate program that allows you to make money by selling products such as books, vitamins, cleaning products, pet products and other stuff through your own Veruni store. You can also recruit other affiliates and make money when they buy or sell products.

Soon after joining SFI I realised that it was going to be hard to be successful with SFI without having my own website. I consider myself to be ok at website development, but when I came across the Plugin Profit Site I couldn't resist signing up. By signing up for a Plugin Profit Site, I received my very own personalised website that promoted SFI along with 4 other affiliate programs (Empowerism, Host4Profit, Internet Marketing Center and Traffic Swarm), I also got my own ezine, complete with home business articles, that promoted each of the 5 programs.

This meant that I didn't have to wait months as I researched and developed my own website. I received my website in less than 24 hours! Amazing!

Since then I have gone from being an Internet Marketing numpty who thought that I just had to submit my website to a search engine and bingo! visitors, money, easy life, to someone who as learned a fair bit about the topics of search engine optimization and website promotion. I wouldn't call myself an expert yet, but I'm impressed with the amount that I've soaked up over the last few months.

I've now had my website "How to Start an Internet Business" for 9 months and as you can see I've made a fair number of changes to it - some redesign, as change of colour and lots of extra pages of content.

Whenever someone signs up for a Plugin Profit Site through my site, I receive the following benefits:
- Empowerism - instant $20 bonus and $7 for per month
- Host4Profit - $10 per month
- SFI - Commision if my signup buys anything or sells anything
- Internet Marketing Center - Commision if my signup buys anything or sells anything
- Traffic Swarm - 100 free credits, extra credits when my signup surfs and $5 commision per month if they upgrade to Pro

Over the last few months I've been getting around 8-10 signups per month. This gives me a minimum of an instant $20 bonus & $17 per month as long as they stick with the programs. Not bad at all!

I think I've waffled on enough for today, but I'll be back in my next post to talk about some of the Internet Marketing, Promotion and advertising methods that I've been using.

Bye for now!

Welcome to Suzanne's Homebiz Blog

Hi there!

My name is Suzanne Morrison and at last I've decided that it's time for me to start blogging. After months of watching everyone else do it, I want to make sure that I don't get left behind!

I guess I'll start off by telling you a little bit about me - just in case you're wondering who the hell I am! As you've probably noticed, my name is Suzanne. I live in the beautiful city of Edinburgh in Scotland. I love living here, but often wish I could send myself off to sunny warm climes for the winter months.

For a living I'm a software developer, but in my spare time I'm working away, trying to make money so I can eventually earn a living online. I say "trying", but I'm actually now succeeding with this. Over the last few months, my online income has been growing and I'm gradually seeing the light at the end of the internet marketing tunnel.

My goal is to one day leave my day job and work from home. I frequently fantasize about having a life of long lies, a few hours of work on my computer, a leisurely lunch followed by perhaps a bit of Yoga, a glass of vino, a couple more hours of work... going away on extended travelling adventures with my laptop... I think you get the picture! It is this dream that is keeping me going.

In my blog I plan on telling you about my progress online. I'll also tell you as I try new things and let you know what works and what doesn't work. If you're also interested in making a living online, perhaps you'll get some ideas or inspiration... well I hope you do.

In my next post I'll let you in on what I have done so far to make money online. In the mean time feel free to check out my website - How to Start an Internet Business

Until then!
